Liver and Biliary Disorders

Liver and biliary disorders refer to a range of conditions that affect the liver, bile ducts, and gallbladder. It’s important to note that if you’re experiencing symptoms of a liver or biliary disorder, you should speak with a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Gastrointestinal SERVICES

Some common liver and biliary disorders include:

a viral infection that causes inflammation of the liver.

a chronic liver disease in which healthy liver tissue is replaced by scar tissue, leading to reduced liver function.

a condition in which excess fat builds up in the liver, often associated with obesity and diabetes.

hardened deposits that form in the gallbladder and can cause abdominal pain and other symptoms.

a rare condition in which the bile ducts become blocked or damaged, leading to liver damage.

an autoimmune disorder in which the bile ducts become damaged, leading to liver damage.

TREATMENT

Treatment for liver and biliary disorders:

  • Hepatitis: Treatment may depend on the type of hepatitis (A, B, C, etc.). Some cases of acute hepatitis may resolve on their own, while chronic hepatitis may require antiviral medications or other treatments to manage symptoms and prevent liver damage.

  • Cirrhosis: Treatment may involve lifestyle changes such as avoiding alcohol and improving nutrition. Medications may be prescribed to manage symptoms and prevent complications such as portal hypertension or hepatic encephalopathy.

  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): Treatment may involve lifestyle changes such as weight loss, exercise, and improving nutrition. In some cases, medication may be prescribed to manage symptoms or reduce liver fat.

  • Gallstones: Treatment may involve medications to dissolve the stones or surgery to remove the gallbladder. In some cases, dietary changes may be recommended to prevent future gallstones.

  • Biliary atresia: Treatment typically involves surgery to restore bile flow and prevent liver damage. In some cases, a liver transplant may be necessary.

  • Primary biliary cholangitis: Treatment may involve medications to reduce inflammation and slow the progression of the disease. In some cases, a liver transplant may be necessary.
